What you will learn

  • Define reflective practice and distinguish it from description, rumination, apology and defense.
  • Explain how reflection relates to U.S. state CE requirements, ACGME Practice-based Learning and Improvement, the ABMS Standards for Continuing Certification and the ACPE CPD cycle.
  • Apply the Kolb, Gibbs, Schön, "What? So what? Now what?" and Johns models, choosing a model to fit the event.
  • Identify the level of a reflective statement and rewrite weak statements into specific, evidence-based ones.
  • Analyze contributing factors fairly and explain the core ideas of just culture.
  • Explain why personal reflective notes may be discoverable and obtainable by a state board.
  • Describe what counts as patient safety work product under the PSQIA and 42 CFR Part 3, what is excluded and the main exceptions.
  • Distinguish state peer review privileges, HCQIA immunity, attorney-client privilege and apology laws.
  • Write reflections that are honest, de-identified, consistent with the record and kept in the right channel.
  • Structure a reflective statement for a board matter with counsel and support it with evidence of change.

About this course

This course explains what reflective practice is and how to do it well, using established models (Kolb, Gibbs, Schön, Rolfe and colleagues, and Johns). It shows where reflection appears in U.S. professional frameworks, including ACGME Practice-based Learning and Improvement, the ABMS Standards for Continuing Certification and the ACPE continuing professional development cycle, and how reflection turns state-mandated CE hours into real learning.

It is written for licensed health care professionals in the United States: physicians, PAs, nurses (RN, LPN/LVN and APRN), pharmacists, dentists and other licensees such as therapists, counselors and social workers. It is useful for everyday professional development, for residents and certified physicians, and for licensees responding to a complaint to their state board.

Reflection in the U.S. carries legal consequences that are often misunderstood. Personal reflective notes may be discoverable in litigation and obtainable by a board, while protections such as patient safety work product under the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 and state peer review laws are specific and technical. This course explains these rules accurately, shows how to write reflections that are honest and safe, and explains how to use reflection in a board matter with the advice of an attorney.

Questions about this course

Are my personal reflective notes protected from discovery?

Generally you should assume they are not. We found no US statute that protects personal reflective notes, so they may be discoverable in litigation or obtainable in a board investigation. Material submitted as patient safety work product to a listed Patient Safety Organization does carry privilege under the PSQIA and 42 CFR Part 3, but original medical records and private notes are not.

Which reflective models does the US course cover?

Five models are practiced (Kolb, Gibbs, Schön, Rolfe's three questions and Johns), choosing the one that fits the event. You then grade the depth of a reflective statement and rewrite weak, descriptive statements into specific, evidence-based ones that analyze contributing factors fairly.

Where does reflection appear in US professional frameworks?

Reflection is a required element in the ACGME competency of Practice-based Learning and Improvement, in ABMS continuing certification standards and in the CPD cycle ACPE promotes for pharmacists. The course shows how reflection supports these frameworks and general state CE, without claiming that this course itself counts for any of them.

How should I use reflection in a board matter?

Keep personal reflections focused on learning, not identifiable patient details or admissions of fact, and analyze events through protected routes like a PSO or a peer review committee. If a board asks for a reflective statement, structure it with your attorney and support it with evidence of change. The course walks through both steps.

What does the reflective practice course include?

Expect about 3 hours online with immediate access. You practice writing reflections, answer short checks, and sit a 20-question test (80% required) before receiving a certificate and your own reflective account. $89; no CE or CME credit.
