About Fitness To Practice

Fitness To Practice is an independent online education provider for regulated health professionals. We write practical ethics and professionalism courses for each country separately, from official sources, and we are open about what our courses can and cannot do.

Why we exist

Many health professionals who face a complaint are capable clinicians. Problems often start on the professional side of practice: a late record, a boundary that drifted, a rushed consent conversation, an angry reply to a complaint or an undisclosed mistake. These topics get little time in training and are rarely revisited.

Our aim is simple: short, practical, accurate courses on those topics, written for the country you practise in, that you can finish in an evening and actually use at work. We serve two groups: professionals keeping their learning up to date for recertification or renewal, and professionals who need to reflect and learn after a concern has been raised.

How we research and write our courses

Health regulation is high-stakes information, so we hold ourselves to a strict sourcing rule: every legal or regulatory fact in a course must come from an official source.

  1. Country brief first. Before any course is written, we build a research brief for that country from primary sources: legislation, regulator and board websites, codes of conduct and ethics, and official bodies. In New Zealand that means the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, the responsible authorities, the Health and Disability Commissioner and the Tribunal; in the United States, state practice acts and boards, the FSMB, the NCSBN, HHS and the professional codes of ethics.
  2. Date-checked facts. Each fact is checked against the live official source and dated. The current editions were checked in October 2026. Anything we cannot confirm is left out or described in general terms rather than guessed.
  3. Original writing. We write every lesson, case scenario and question ourselves. We do not reuse content from other course providers, and each country edition is written separately rather than by swapping names.
  4. Independent checking. Each course is reviewed by separate checkers for legal and regulatory accuracy, teaching quality and assessment fairness before it is published.

How we keep courses up to date

Codes and guidance change. When a regulator or professional body publishes a new standard, we review the affected courses and update them. Recent examples we track include the Medical Council of New Zealand's guidance on using artificial intelligence in patient care (March 2026), New Zealand's new information privacy principle IPP 3A (in force from 1 May 2026) and the 2025 edition of the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses.

If you find a fact on the site that seems wrong or stale, let us know via the contact page. Corrections to legal or regulatory facts are treated as a priority.

Our honesty rules

These rules apply to every page and every course we publish:

  • We have no affiliation with, and no accreditation, approval or endorsement from, the bodies that regulate or represent health professionals. That covers the Medical Council of New Zealand, the Nursing Council of New Zealand, the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, any US state board, the FSMB or the NCSBN.
  • We do not claim that our courses award CE or CME credit or that they are board-approved.
  • We never promise an outcome in a complaint, investigation, hearing, order or renewal.
  • Our courses are education, not legal advice. We encourage anyone facing a regulatory process to get advice from their indemnity insurer, union, professional association or lawyer.

Where we are available

The New Zealand and United States editions are live, each with 12 courses priced in local currency. Further editions are in preparation and will open only once their research and checking are complete. One account works across every edition.

Questions

Who checks the legal facts in your courses?

Every course goes through separate review stages after it is written, including a dedicated check of each named law, regulation, code and process against the official source. Facts that cannot be confirmed on an official website are removed or kept general. The date of the last full check is recorded, and courses are reviewed again when the underlying codes or laws change.

Do you use material from other course providers?

No. We research from primary sources such as legislation, regulators and official codes, and we write all lessons, scenarios and assessment questions ourselves. Secondary sources like news articles, blogs or other providers' courses are not used as the basis for course content or listed as references.

Why do you publish what you are not?

Because practitioners buying a course after a complaint can be misled by vague claims of recognition. Being clear that we are independent, not accredited and not board-approved lets you make an informed decision and check with your regulator, board or adviser before you rely on a course for a specific purpose.

How do I report an error in a course?

Use the contact form and choose the option for factual corrections, or email us. Tell us the course, the section and what you believe is wrong, with a link to the official source if you have one. We review correction reports first and update the course if the source confirms the change.

Is Fitness To Practice a regulator or part of one?

No. We are a private, independent education provider. We have no role in registering, licensing, investigating or disciplining anyone, and we have no influence over any regulator's or board's decisions. Information about your own registration or case should always come from your regulator or board directly.
